Spelling

Spelling at The Woolenwick Schools
At The Woolenwick Schools, we use the Emile Spelling Scheme across Years 2–6 to provide a consistent, engaging and progressive approach to spelling.
The scheme is fully mapped and aligned to the National Curriculum and supports the approach outlined in the Writing Framework, ensuring that spelling is taught explicitly and systematically throughout Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
Using Emile provides our pupils with:
-
Explicit teaching of spelling rules
-
Morphology to develop pupils' understanding of word structure
-
Etymology to deepen vocabulary and explore word origins
-
Phonics to reinforce spelling knowledge where appropriate
The breadth of resources enables staff to deliver engaging lessons while ensuring consistency across year groups. By teaching spelling through a combination of rules, morphology, etymology and phonics, our pupils develop the knowledge and confidence needed to become accurate, independent spellers.
